Advancing dentistry

Nottingham dentistry has been changed in recent years by the introduction and spread of a new technology called CEREC.  This innovation allows patients to come in for procedures such as crowns and veneers which would normally take weeks to complete, with the teeth being prepared at  one appointment and then the prosthetic made at a lab, and instead walk away in hours with the treatment finished. Such technology is a good way to prevent a dental practice for sale sign from appearing, but keeping up with modern dentistry.

Rather than requiring images to be taken and sent to a dental laboratory for fabrication of the prosthetic, the CEREC system involves sending the images directly to an on site computer which builds a 3-D model of the teeth and allows a CG image of the new item to be produced.  The same dentist who prepared the teeth and took the image then alters the computer model to make the most natural looking, best fitting prosthetic.

Once happy, the dentist sends this information to an automated milling machine which is also on site, here the piece is fabricated from a single block of high quality ceramic material which has been selected from a vast range of colours as the best to fit in with the patient’s teeth.  They then make any finishing touches and install the new prosthesis just an hour or so after the preparation was done.

Obviously dental jobs are very different if this technology is used, the dentist eliminating the need for a separate laboratory and technician.  There are courses for dentists who wish to learn how to use such techniques in order to provide a better, faster service to their clients. Treatment like a root canal may be necessary beforehand though and you should ask your dentist about such things.
